Welcome to Kuumba's Heart
-Handcrafted Jewelry by Sadarryle
Kuumba's Heart features handmade jewelry, and currently focuses on two primary lines. My original line (now informally referred to as “My Sister’s Keeper”) features pieces that incorporate fair trade certified and ethically produced beads from parts of Africa and the Philippines. While the line incorporates other elements such as gemstones, bone, crystals, domestic glass, and ceramic beads, it is unified by the rich colors, the craftsmanship, and the vision/purpose behind fair trade beads. Sharing the beauty and the message/purpose of these beads is what lead me to start making and selling jewelry professionally. I see my creations as one small way to contribute to further economic growth and development on a global level.
My most recent line is the Paper Gems collection. My first encounter with recycled paper beads was during a period of research while I looked to expand my fair trade certified beads offerings. A company that distributed beads produced in Kenya started representing a group of artists from Uganda. Until then, I was not familiar with the idea of making jewelry from paper but I loved the jewelry that I began to design using the “Paper to Pearls” beads. Over time, I became more and more intrigued by the “process” of creating paper beads. I was also excited about the possibility of adapting and expanding traditional Ugandan methods to see what new creations I could produce. After multiple “experiments” I finally adopted my own techniques for paper bead making that allow me to create beads that are hard, durable, and water resistant.
Please check out my shop often, as I am always in the process of adding new additions. I also design and create custom pieces upon request.
How/Why choose the name Kuumba’s Heart?
Kuumba means “creativity” in Swahili, so the name equates to “Creativity’s Heart” –or- “the heart of creativity”. It reflects the fact that I love to work with unique and beautiful beads. My favorite pieces also tend to be bold and colorful.
What type of jewelry do you make?
I don’t know exactly why, but I seem to be drawn to earrings - maybe because I don’t get to wear a lot of jewelry due to my job. However, I find that every outfit looks better with a great pair of earrings. That being said, I make a variety of jewelry pieces - earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings. All of my pieces are handmade by me. I typically accent my pieces with semi-precious gemstones and crystals. My collections are about 98% geared for women. However, I am expanding my designs to accommodate requests from men. For example, I design some unisex leather bracelets and even a few gemstone bracelets specifically for men.
Where can you find pieces by Kuumba’s Heart?
You can purchase pieces from my online store. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for Kuumba’s Heart at a local craft fair or festival. My upcoming events in NC and SC will be posted on my Facebook page.
